With over thirty live sites across the United States, Lifepoint Informatics is a leading provider of lab outreach connectivity products and services.  Its Labtest application suite enables hospitals and independent labs to provide physicians with a single online interface for ordering, tracking, and analyzing lab test results. The application is entirely web-based, built on InterSystems’ Caché database platform.

In 2005, Lifepoint brought in J2 to augment its in-house software development team on an ongoing basis.  Since then, J2’s work has resulted in significant enhancements to Labtest’s patient search capabilities, test ordering functions, result reporting and graphing features, and lab administrator tools.  J2 also led a fundamental re-architecture of the application’s underlying code base, making Labtest more scalable, maintainable, and customizable than ever before and greatly reducing Lifepoint’s implementation time for new clients.  Most recently, J2 has used InterSystems’ Ensemble integration platform to develop an entirely new system for Lifepoint to import patient data and lab results from clinical and laboratory information systems into Labtest.

Within the development team itself, J2 has designed and implemented several key productivity tools at Lifepoint, such as source code control, code promotion to test and live sites, and integration of the company’s trouble ticketing system with developers’ desktop IDEs.

In addition to our work as part of Lifepoint’s product development team, J2 performs application customization services on behalf of Lifepoint for clients who need specialized functionality and interfaces tailored to their specific needs.

With an ongoing resource commitment of 1.5 FTEs per month, and frequent “bursts” of activity to as high as 3 FTEs, Lifepoint is an excellent example of how J2 can provide staff augmentation with a strategic impact far beyond that of a traditional “body shop.”
